German Grammar

Grammix

Description

The Grammix CD Rom is a bootable CD Rom that contains a complete grammar development system (the TRALE-System) and example grammars, which correspond to the respective chapters in the text book Einführung in die Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar. In addition, the CD Rom contains the Babel System and grammars for Chinese, Maltese, and German wich have a common core and use Minimal Recursion Semantics for semantic representations.

You may use the software contained on the CD to:

System Requirements

The CD rom contains Knoppix 5.0.1 as operating system and KDE as graphical desktop. Therefore the system requirements correspond to the system requirements imposed by Knoppix:

If you want to work with more complex grammars (starting from Chapter 10), you need 256 MB memory, 512 MB are recomended. If you work with [incr tsdb()], another Trale process is started and you need the coresponding amount more memory.

You need a good internet connection for the download! At least DSL is required, since the size of the CD image is 460MB.

Localization

Since the CD rom is a supplement of a textbook in German, the default language is German. If you prefer English, you may boot the system and enter the language code as an option at the boot prompt and press return:

knoppix lang=en

This will select the respective keyboard driver and provide menues and icon names in KDE according to the language you selected. If your keyboard is not German, you may not find the `=' key. It is located at Shift+0.

If you do not enter this boot option you may still switch the keyboard by clicking on the language icon in the KDE panel (right lower corner). However, the menues and icon names are not affected by this.

Since the localization files are very big not all languages are included in the CD rom. If your language is missing, please send me an email. You may help me with the localization.

Currently the following localizations are supported: be Belgian (partly)

Licences

The CD rom contains a chart display that was developed by the DFKI GmbH. For using it, you need a licence, which is free for non-comercial use. Please write an EMail to Stephan Busemann in which you inform him that you will use the CD rom.

Apart from the chart display the CD rom contains only software that is also contained in the Knoppix CD rom or is available in other Linux distributions. The CD rom does not contain SICStus-Prolog. The Trale on the CD is a runtime executable that can be used without a SICStus licence.

Grammix and Other Operating Systems

This section is for advanced users only! There will be not support.

You do not need an operating system to use Grammix. If you need to run Windows and Grammix in parallel, you can use the VM Player. Mac users with Intel Macs can use VMware Fusion. Doug Arnold provided the files Trale-Harddisk.vmx, Trale-CD.vmx, and Trale.vmdk . If you want to boot the Grammix image from harddisk, copy the ISO image together with Trale-Harddisk.vmx and Trale.vmdk into one directory. If you want to use the Grammix image on the CD rom, insert the CD rom, save Trale-CD.vmx and Trale.vmdk on your harddisk and click it.
